Fairbanks Today
Fairbanks and Interior Alaska have many fine attributes including a gold mining industry featuring the largest mine in North
America, the Ft. Knox Gold Mine. Our year round tourism industry is booming. Winter brings the finest skiing and dog
mushing trails in the world. Our Aurora Borealis (northern lights) viewing is second to none. And summers are teaming
with activity, with 24 hours of sunlight a day, there is plenty of time for fishing, hunting, camping, boating, gardening and
relaxing in the land of the midnight sun . . . and let's not forget the outdoor activities for kids of all ages like soccer, softball,
and marathon racing ... just to name a few.
Our University of Alaska boasts the most advanced Super Computing technology in the arctic. Recently constructed was
the International Arctic Research Center, directed Dr. Syun Akasofu, well-known for his research and publications on the
Aurora Borealis and in Arctic Research. The Elmer Rasmuson Library on the Fairbanks Campus has a significant
Alaskan and Polar Regions Archives department in addition to their impressive collection of printed materials. The
UA Otto Geist Museum,
also located on the Fairbanks campus, is currently building a $31 million dollar expansion. The
museum has become a storehouse of arctic artifacts from many regions tracing back to early day Alaska history.
Downtown Fairbanks, the heart of the Golden Heart City has been undergoing a transformation with the addition of the
new Marriott Hotel, the State Court House, a new parking structure, the Centennial Pedestrian/Bike Bridge and the
Barnette's Landing Beautification Project. These projects and more serve to compliment the charm and vitality of our city's
center.
